I understand that w.l.o.g. \box0 puts the content of box 0 and clears the content of box 0, while \copy0 puts the content of box 0 and does not change the content of box 0 at all.

I copied the cases code form amsmath.sty and tried to wrap the \lbrace within a macro and added a \left. to get this to compile.  This of course looses the size info so the brace is not the correct  ...
