AE 146 Orbital Mechanics
Spring Quarter 2003
Design Project Part II
Oral presentation June 4th in class
Paper report due June 6th at TA’s office
For
grading criteria, see link under design project
The total design project (parts I and II) consists of 20% of your total
grade. No standard solution is available. You may assume values for any
parameters you may need -- you need only to justify your assumptions.
Objective (Part II)
The objective of part II is to design a rocket and staging sequence that will take a payload mass, m*, of 250 kg to its final destination in GEO. Your rocket will conduct the maneuvers designed in Part I of this design project. In addition to this payload, you will receive another payload mass, m*' of 100 kg from the first rendezvous satellite in GEO that you will deliver to the second one that is 10 degrees in front of you.
Oral Presentation (worth 50% of your
design grade) Wed
June 4th in class
You
will present a summary of your project in an 8 minute presentation. The summary presentation includes information
from parts I and II and should be done in a powerpoint presentation with overhead transparencies. The goal of the oral presentation,
is to convince your audience that your chosen scenario is the best. This is best done by comparing different
scenarios and by justifying certain assumptions.
Written Report (worth 50% of your design grade) due Friday June 6th
in TA’s office before
Your project (both parts I and II) should be contained in a single type written project report (one report per group). The thrust of the report is to provide compelling evidence that your final design is best. To this end, you should also show results for other situations that you have calculated that for some reason described in your report are inferior to your final design. Your report should contain the following (please keep it less than 15 pages):
